Memory foam is uniquely prone to sagging on slatted bed frames — more so than innerspring or hybrid mattresses. The reason is in the material's core behaviour: memory foam is designed to conform and mould to pressure. That's what makes it comfortable. But it means it also conforms to the surface beneath it — including the gaps between slats.
Over months and years, the foam gradually deforms into those gaps, creating permanent body impressions and uneven sleeping surfaces. This is often mistaken for a faulty mattress, but in most cases the mattress is fine — the foundation is the problem.
Most memory foam mattress warranties require slat spacing of 3 inches or less, and a solid, flat foundation. If your slats are wider, sagging voids many warranties — including major brands like Casper, Nectar, and Purple.
The quickest test: remove your mattress and look at the slat spacing. If you can fit your hand between slats with room to spare, the gaps are likely causing the sagging.
Also check: is the sagging in the same spot every night (body impression), or is it in random spots that correspond to slat gaps? Body impressions = foam wear. Slat-pattern sagging = foundation problem.
Placing a bunkie board on top of your existing slats creates a completely flat, solid surface — eliminating all gaps that the foam can sink into. This works for any memory foam mattress thickness.
Set it aside on the floor or lean it against a wall.
Lay it flat across the full width of the frame. No tools needed.
The board provides a solid, continuous surface with no gaps.
No more sagging into slat gaps. Your mattress performs as designed.
For memory foam mattresses, we recommend our Premium 10mm Slim Bunkie Board — our best-selling product, rated 4.6 stars on Amazon. It provides a perfectly flat surface without adding meaningful height to your bed.
| Situation | Recommended Board |
|---|---|
| Standard platform bed, slats too far apart | 10mm Slim Bunkie Board |
| Very heavy mattress or sleepers (300+ lbs) | Heavy-Duty MDF Bunkie Board |
| Bunk bed with memory foam | 10mm Slim Twin Bunkie Board |
If your mattress has deep permanent body impressions (more than 1.5 inches), the foam itself may be permanently deformed — especially if it's over 7 years old. A bunkie board will prevent further sagging but won't fully reverse existing deep impressions. In this case, consider whether it's time to replace the mattress itself.
However, if the impression is under an inch deep, proper foundation support often allows the foam to partially recover over a few weeks.
All our support boards ship fast with Amazon Prime. Easy returns, verified reviews, multiple sizes.
