How to Stop a Bed Frame From Squeaking at Night

Find the Squeak First

Before fixing anything, locate the squeak precisely. Press down on the mattress in different spots, move it side to side, and listen carefully. Common squeak locations:

✅ Quick Isolation Test

Remove the mattress completely. Press on the bare slats and frame. If it's silent without the mattress, the noise is mattress-on-slat friction. If it still squeaks, it's the frame joints.

Fix 1: Tighten All Bolts and Screws (Free)

This fixes the majority of frame joint squeaks. Use a hex key or wrench to tighten every bolt on the frame — headboard brackets, footboard brackets, side rail connections, and centre support connections. Do this systematically, every bolt. For wooden frames, check for loose screws in corner brackets and slat holders.

Fix 2: Add Felt Pads Between Slats and Frame (Under $5)

Cut self-adhesive felt pads to fit and stick them to the top of the frame rails where slats rest. This cushions the slat-to-frame contact and eliminates friction noise. Available from any hardware store for a few dollars.

Fix 3: A Bunkie Board (Best Long-Term Fix for Slat Noise)

A bunkie board placed on top of the slats eliminates all slat-to-frame friction by creating a single flat surface. The mattress rests on the board, not directly on the slats. No contact between mattress and slats = no friction = no noise. This is the most permanent solution for slat-related squeaking.

Fix 4: WD-40 or Beeswax on Metal Joints (Metal Frames)

For metal frame squeaks at joints, a light spray of WD-40 or application of beeswax on the contact surfaces eliminates metal-on-metal friction. This is a quick fix but may need repeating after a few months. For a longer-lasting solution, tighten the joints and apply a thread-locking compound.

Fix 5: Rubber Washers on Bolts (Permanent for Metal Frames)

For metal frames that squeak at bolt connections even when tight, adding small rubber washers between the bolt head and frame prevents metal-on-metal contact. This permanently eliminates vibration-related squeaking at those connection points.

Fix 6: Rotate or Replace the Mattress

If you've ruled out all frame issues and the squeak persists, the noise may be from innerspring coils inside an older mattress. Rotating the mattress 180 degrees sometimes moves the squeaky spring to a less-used area. If the mattress is over 8–10 years old and has innerspring coils, it may be time for replacement — or an upgrade to a silent foam or hybrid mattress.
