How to Make a Sofa Firmer — 6 Methods That Actually Work

The Problem With Soft Sofas

A sofa that felt perfectly comfortable in the showroom can become frustratingly soft after a year or two of regular use. The foam compresses, the base webbing sags, and you end up sitting in a hammock instead of a sofa. The good news: there are multiple ways to fix it, at different budgets and effort levels.

Method 1: Add a Sofa Support Board (Best Fix)

The most effective and lowest-effort fix. A firm support board slides under your existing cushions and creates a solid base above the saggy webbing. This addresses the root cause — the collapsed base — rather than just masking it.

Our heavy-duty couch support boards are available in widths from 21.5″ to 35″ to match your sofa's seat depth exactly.

✅ Why This Works Best

Most sofa softness is caused by the base webbing or springs losing tension — not the cushions. A support board fixes the structural cause. New cushion foam treats only the symptom.

Method 2: Replace or Top-Up Cushion Foam

If the board adds enough firmness overall but individual cushions still feel flat, adding new foam is the next step. You can buy high-density foam inserts online, cut them to size, and slip them inside your existing cushion covers. High-density foam (2.0+ lbs/ft³) is significantly firmer than the standard foam used in most sofas.

Method 3: Add a Non-Slip Cushion Grip Mat

If your cushions slide forward and create an uneven surface, a non-slip grip mat placed under them keeps them in place. This also slightly raises the cushion height, which can add a perception of firmness. Inexpensive and takes 30 seconds.

Method 4: Flip and Rotate Cushions Regularly

Most people sit in the same spot every time. This compresses the foam unevenly. Flipping reversible cushions and rotating which cushion goes where distributes wear evenly and can extend cushion life significantly. Do this every 2–3 months.

Method 5: Restuff With Polyester Fiberfill

For cushions that have lost volume rather than firmness, adding polyester fiberfill (the same material used in pillow stuffing) can restore height. Open the zipper on your cushion cover, add fiberfill around the foam core, and zip closed. This is especially effective for back cushions.

Method 6: Replace the Base Webbing (Advanced)

If you're comfortable with DIY and your sofa is worth repairing, replacing the rubber or fabric webbing underneath is a permanent fix. You'll need a webbing stretcher tool and replacement webbing, but the result is a sofa that feels brand new structurally. However, this takes 2–4 hours and requires turning the sofa upside down.

For most people, a support board delivers 90% of the result at 2% of the effort. Start there.
