A squeaky bed is one of the most disruptive sleep problems — and one of the most misunderstood. Most people assume it's the mattress. But most of the time, the noise is coming from somewhere else entirely.
Before you fix it, you need to find it. There are three main sources of bed squeaking:
Remove your mattress completely and press down on the slats one by one. If you hear the squeak, it's the slats. If it's silent, push on the frame joints — squeaking there means loose bolts.
This is by far the most common cause. The fix: eliminate friction between the slat and frame.
Tighten every bolt and screw on your bed frame with the appropriate tool — usually a hex key or wrench. For metal frames, check where the side rails slot into the headboard and footboard. For wooden frames, check corner brackets and slat holders. Once tightened, add a drop of thread-lock compound to prevent them loosening again.
If you've ruled out the frame and slats, and your mattress is more than 7–10 years old with innerspring coils, the noise may be internal. Unfortunately, coil noise is a sign the mattress needs replacing. Switching to a memory foam or hybrid mattress eliminates spring noise permanently.
A bunkie board is the most permanent solution for slat-related squeaking. It creates a solid, continuous surface that removes all points of friction between mattress and frame — no more noise, ever.
